Jessica Aber, the former U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia (EDVA), was discovered dead at her residence on Saturday, according to authorities.
The 43-year-old attorney was discovered at her Alexandria, Virginia, home after resigning following the inauguration of President Donald Trump in January.
The circumstances surrounding her death are being investigated, according to a police release. The statement continued, “This morning, at approximately 9:18 AM, Alexandria police responded to a report of an unresponsive woman in the 900 block of Beverly Drive.”
It said that the cause and manner of death would be decided by the office of the Virginia Chief Medical Examiner.
In his statement, current U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia Eric S. Sebert said he was “heartbroken beyond words” to hear of Ms. Aber’s passing, adding, “We are amazed by how much she accomplished in her brief time in this world. Her professional expertise, grace, and legal skills set the standard. She was unparalleled as a leader, mentor, and prosecutor, and as a human being, irreplaceable.”
“Each and every one of us in the Eastern District of Virginia will look to her example and seek to live up to that standard,” he added, “despite the fact that we are crushed by this loss. From high school to college and all the way through her career, Jessica was a proud Virginian. EDVA loved her, and she loved EDVA. As she fought for justice, we are dedicated to continuing her life’s work.

In 2009, she started working at EDVA as an Assistant U.S. Attorney, where she handled cases involving child exploitation, violent crimes, public corruption, and financial fraud.
Ms. Aber served as an advisor to the Assistant Attorney General in the Department of Justice’s Criminal Division from 2015 to 2016, working on intricate tasks. She also held the position of Deputy Chief of the Criminal Division at EDVA until being appointed U.S. Attorney in 2016.
